Shortly thereafter, they moved to Melbourne where he practiced law until 1910. In 1911, he became a professor of literature at the University of Melbourne. In late 1913, he returned to England where he practiced law for a short time before returning to London as secretary to Sir Robert Baden-Powell.

In 1916, he left England for good and moved to New York City with his second wife, Christine Dissette. In 1918, Dixon's first book appeared: An Essay on Poetry: Being a Study of Beauty and Its Origin (London: Arthur Hall). This was followed by Poetical Theory and Practice (1923), Poetical Grammar (1926), Poetry and Philosophic Thought (1928), and Poetry and the Ideal (1931).

It was also during this time that he began working as a freelance writer for various periodicals such as The American Magazine and The Dial. He wrote several plays which were produced at various theatres but none were published. His last book was Complete Plays of Roland Burrage Dixon (1939).
