His interest in acting increased when he attended a performance in a provincial theater in 1939, and at seventeen he made his debut in a touring theatrical company. He also appeared in two films in 1940. In 1941, Moore was accepted into the repertory cast at the J.C.
Pearson's Players' Theatre in London, which subsequently became the Royal Shakespeare Company after the war. In 1948 Moore recorded his first television program for BBC Television. In 1954, Moore gained public recognition when he played opposite Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story, for which he received his first BAFTA Award nomination.
In 1956 Moore played opposite Elizabeth Taylor in The Starcross Story and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama.
