Robert S. McNamara is the former United States Secretary of Defense, from 1961 to 1968 under President John F. Kennedy and from 1973 to 1977 under President Richard M. Nixon
He is a graduate of Harvard University and earned a PhD in policy studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1964. In April 2001, he was named President of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), a federally funded research and development center. The IDA has been a pioneer in identifying emerging defense challenges and risks, including climate change and terrorism.
