Robert Rolih was born in the year 1932 in the city of Prague, Czechoslovakia. He attended art school for 8 years and upon graduation decided to join his older brother who was already studying to be a painter. He concentrated on oil painting, but also worked with other media, including watercolors, pencils, crayons, pastels, and collage. He has exhibited his work in galleries around the world, including in Paris at Galerie Cristina Visconti, in Rome at Galleria Rosso Bianco, in New York City at Galerie Luisotti and in Tokyo at Galerie Etsuko Kikuchi. He received an Honorable Mention from the International Biennial of Illustration in Prague in 1989. In 1999 he was awarded a Grand Prize for Best Illustration from the Rome Biennial of Illustration. In 2001 he received a Gold Medal Award from the American Federation of Arts for "excellence in illustration." His book National Geographic World Atlas (2003) received the prestigious Book Design Award from Graphis Magazine (Adobe) and he is listed by Print Magazine as one of the 50 most important graphic designers of all time.
