Robert Holdstock (1935-2016) is an Australian writer of fantasy literature, who has written many novels, short stories, and poems. His works are noted for their literary quality. Holdstock was born in Melbourne on 13 May 1935. He began writing at the age of twelve, but it wasn't until he was nineteen that his short stories were published
During this time he also studied drama, English literature and psychology at university. He was engaged to be married in 1962, but the marriage did not take place. Holdstock then travelled to Europe where he lived in France and Spain.
In 1964, he emigrated to New Zealand, where he spent the next twenty years. He married again in 1977 and had three children with his wife.
