Robert Edeson was born in England in 1951. He began his career as a journalist and broadcaster, including work for BBC Radio's Today and World Service, the BBC's Chart Show and the Independent Television News Review. He also worked as a freelance writer and editor. He is the author of three novels: The Good Son, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and A Sinner in Paradise
His first published book was a non-fiction biography of famous British actress Merle Oberon, which won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award in 1983. His other non-fiction works include biographies of British cyclist Tom Simpson and American singer Edith Piaf. He has written screenplays for such films as the Tony Scott directed Top Gun (1986) and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984).
