Robert Bridges was born in Amsterdam, 1845, the son of a leather merchant. He studied classics and philosophy at Leiden University and then medicine at Utrecht University. After graduating as a doctor he worked as a psychiatrist in Amsterdam and then as an eye specialist in England before moving to Vienna to work as a neurologist. In 1872 he became assistant lecturer in philosophy at the University of Vienna, where he remained until his death in 1923
He is best known for his translation and commentary on the works of Plato and his lectures on Kantian philosophy were highly respected.
