Robert A. Taft was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1921 by President Warren Harding, who had been a law professor at Yale University when Taft was a student there. The younger Taft graduated from Yale Law School in 1913 and went on to practice law in Cincinnati, Ohio before joining the faculty of Yale in 1917
He was elected a member of the American Law Institute in 1928 and was elected president of the organization in 1935. In addition to his legal career, he also served as an editor of the New York Times from 1920 to 1923 and as a member of the board of trustees for the Whitney Museum from 1913 to 1938.
