He attended the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, where he became a member of Second Stage Theater's company. Eventually becoming their artistic director, he helped to launch the career of Katie Holmes. Thomas had originally wanted to be an actor but changed his mind after his time at Second Stage.
Thomas got his start writing for television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek before he started writing for Veronica Mars, which is credited with launching his career as one of television's most successful showrunners. Thomas' songwriting credits include "I Love You" by Semisonic, "This Night" by Tristan Prettyman, "Hair Loss" by The Bravery, "The Kill" by Rilo Kiley, "Make Out Party" by The Format. And "You're So Last Summer" by Semisonic (which he co-wrote with Dave Fridmann).
