Rita Levi-Montalcini won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986, the first woman to receive the award. Her research on nerve growth factor has led to new medical treatments for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, macular degeneration and other diseases. She was also one of the first scientists to see why heart cells work together in groups, which has led to the development of new organ transplantation techniques. Her work has earned her many honors, including the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research (1972), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1981), and honorary degrees from universities around the world.
