Barnum, and in his youth he also developed a love of travel, which led to his being entranced by the idea of travel literature. In 1907, Halliburton published a book about his own travels around the world called In Darkest Africa. In 1918, another book of his travels appeared called In The Land of the Great Red Dragon and Other Travels Around the World.

He died on June 16th 1940 in Miami Beach.
