Butler served as president of the American Psychiatric Association (1917-1923), president of the American Medical Association (1924-1927), and president of the American Neurological Association (1931-1932). He also founded or cofounded many other medical organizations, including the Society for Psychosomatic Medicine, the American Psychosomatic Society, and the Society for Psychosomatic Research. Dr.
Butler received numerous honors for his achievements, including the Gold Medal Award of the New York Academy of Medicine in 1932. He died in 1947.
