Raymond Williams was born in Wales in 1906. He studied at Oxford University where he received a first-class degree in philosophy. He later became an assistant lecturer at the university, teaching logic and literary theory. Raymond Williams based his work on the ideas of Georg Lukacs
He held visiting fellowships at the universities of California at Berkeley, Cornell, London School of Economics, New York University, and Princeton.
