He spent most of his working life as a journalist and novelist, writing for The Evening Post for many years and ultimately becoming editor of the New Zealand Truth. He published several novels, including the world's first bicycle novel, "Bicycle Bill" (1904), and "The Zodiac Caravan" (1923).
