Raymond Arroyo was born in San Francisco, California, and earned a Ph.D. in Classics from Princeton University. His translations from the Latin won him the James Joyce Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and were published by Random House, Penguin, HarperCollins, and others. He has published numerous books of poetry and fiction, including The Wedding Invitation (winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award), The Moon in the Orange Tree (a New York Times Notable Book), and The Fifth Son (winner of a PEN Center USA Literary Award for Fiction)
His book The Door to Saturn won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction. In his spare time he teaches literature at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, leads poetry workshops at Harvard University's Dunster House, goes on long walks with his dog Stella, works on his next novel idea, and tries not to think about composing the next symphony.
