Rabbi Hillel was a disciple of Rabbi Shimon HaTzaddik, the greatest sage of his generation, who passed away in the year 3760. Hillel became the headmaster of the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem, and under him, it became one of the most important centers of Talmudic studies.
