Rabbi Hillel was a disciple of Rabbi Shimon HaTzaddik, the greatest sage of his generation, who passed away in the year 3760. Hillel became the headmaster of the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem, and under him, it became one of the most important centers of Talmudic studies. It is said that the whole world was gathering at the Great Synagogue to hear him teach. He was also one of the foremost halachists (Jewish law experts), known for his brilliant legal decisions
He was an outstanding commentator on Talmudic law, and his commentary on Shulhan Aruch is still used today.
