R. Daneel Olivaw was born in Los Angeles, California in 1968, the son of two musicians - pianist Ralph Olivaw and composer/arranger/keyboardist Shirley Olivaw. He is the eldest of three children. He began to play piano at age 4, then began formal piano studies at age 9, passing his first music examination at age 12
At age 15 he became a professional musician, performing in concerts with symphony orchestras throughout the United States. He left home when he was 18 to pursue a career as a classical pianist in Europe, but quickly realized that the art form he loved most was not for him to pursue professionally. After being rejected by three universities, he enrolled in California State University, Los Angeles where he studied business administration and music composition.
While there, he discovered that his interest in music composition was more closely aligned with that of sound design than classical composition. Thus began his journey into the field of electronic music production.
