R. Bosworth Smith (1860-1940) was an American author and editor of religious literature. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1860. He graduated from Harvard University in 1881, received his A.M
in 1886, and his Ph.D in 1889. He taught at Dartmouth College until 1889, when he became professor of English at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 1914 he became professor of English at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
From 1917 to 1930 he was chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
