Quentin Bell was born in New York City. At the age of nine, his family moved to Los Angeles, California. By the time he graduated from high school, he had already produced his first comic book series, which was distributed through King Features Syndicate. He attended the California Institute of Arts where he studied with Ray Harryhausen and began working for Walt Disney Productions
After working for Walt Disney for five years, he attempted to establish his own animation studio. Eventually this endeavor failed too. He then worked as a story artist at Warner Bros.
studios for three years before joining DC Comics in 1948 as an editor. He edited Batman for three years before being promoted to Executive Editor, during which time he edited Superman and Wonder Woman. While at DC Comics, he created Green Arrow and Hawkgirl, among other characters.
