Pollyanna Darling was born in the mid-1800s in New York City. The daughter of a journalist, she worked as a secretary for several prominent figures in the political and social sphere, including President Grover Cleveland, Congressman William Henry Smith and Secretary of State John Hay. In 1920, the year after she turned thirty, she published her first work of fiction, The Secret Garden, which was an instant success and has been translated into twenty-one languages to date. She has written more than fifty books overall; her most popular titles include The Jolly Corner (1948), The Secret Garden (1949), A Pocket Full of Rye (1949), Pollyanna: Her Life and Times (1985) and Pollyanna: Her Works (2002).
