He attended l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he met André Derain and exhibited with them in 1905 and 1908. They and other artists associated with Les Nabis promoted an interest in archaic and folk art, in contrast to academic painters who had come to dominate the Salon de la Société des Artistes Indépendants (SAI) starting in 1884. When they formed their own group, they named it Les Nabis (The Nabis).
