Phil Gramm is a former United States Senator from Texas. Gramm was a member of the Republican Party, and served as Senator from Texas from 1995 to 1999. He was a candidate for United States President in 1999. Gramm was elected to the United States Senate in 1984, defeating incumbent Democrat John Tower, who had been appointed to the seat after the resignation of Lloyd Bentsen
In 1986, he was re-elected with 58% of the vote. In 1992, he was re-elected with 61% of the vote. Gramm left public office in January 1999 after being defeated for re-election by Kay Bailey Hutchison in 1998.
