Peter Viereck was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 5, 1891. He received his B.A. from Yale College in 1914, and after serving in the military with the U.S
Cavalry during World War I, he returned to Yale to study art history and philosophy. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Berlin under Edmund Husserl in 1922.
As a teacher at Harvard University, he founded the History of Philosophy department, established the graduate program in philosophy, and wrote extensively on the history of political thought during the 18th century and 19th century European thought. He was also a founding member of the New England Conservatory of Music and wrote extensively on music theory and composition.
