Peter Roebuck was born in Brussels, Belgium, where he studied art and then medicine. He became an illustrator, first for the Belgian newspaper "Het Volk", then for the weekly magazine "Tijd". He first met Winston Churchill in 1917 when they were both war correspondents attached to the British Expeditionary Force. Roebuck was to become Churchill's closest personal friend and confidant

During his time with Churchill, Roebuck sketched many of his famous speeches (for example, the famous Harrow School Speech) and also painted one of his most famous portraits which hangs in The Churchill War Rooms museum.
