At age 12, he saw his first airplane fly over his home town. From then on, planes were part of his life's adventures. As a teenager he played piano in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra during its European tour, which took him to London, Vienna, Budapest and Prague.
He attended Harvard College in Cambridge for two years before joining the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After receiving his wings in 1943 at Hamilton Air Force Base in California, he flew B-26 bombers in combat in Europe before receiving an honorable discharge after the war ended.
