Pete McCloskey, the former Mayor of San Jose, California, is a California politician who served on the San Jose City Council for eight years and was mayor for nine. He was previously a member of the California State Assembly and co-authored the landmark piece of legislation that legalized same-sex marriage in California. He was also one of the leading proponents of Proposition 8 in 2008, which banned same-sex marriage in the state. He is currently an attorney at Smith & McCloskey in San Francisco, where he practices environmental law.
