Paul Torday was born in 1957. He studied German and English at Lancaster University, where he began to write professionally. After graduating with a degree in English, he travelled around the world, working as a journalist and later as a writer of advertising copy. His first novel, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists won the Skylark Award in 1993 and was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize
His second novel, The Abolitionist (2002), deals with the life of John Brown and is set against the backdrop of the American Civil War. He lives in London.
