Paul Orfalea was born in Santa Barbara, California in 1941. He got his first job at the age of 15 as a newsboy for the local newspaper. In 1962, he left home to get a college education. In 1971, Orfalea founded Kinko's, a nationwide chain of office supply stores. By 1980 he had opened more than 80 Kinko's outlets and was growing the business rapidly. In 1986, Orfalea sold his shares in Kinko's.
He founded Orfalea Paper Resources to produce and market recycled paper products. Orfalea has been active in other businesses as well. In 1980 he opened a bar called Fon Fon's, claiming that it would offer an "environmental" alternative to drinking at other bars in the area.
In 1982 he opened a restaurant called Fon Fon's Too, which featured an outdoor dining area overlooking the beach in Santa Monica. On December 14, 1996, Paul Orfalea died at his home in Santa Monica after suffering from prostate cancer.
