Otto Eduard Leopold, Prince of Bismarck, Duke of Lauenburg (German: [ˈlaubn̩ʁk]; 7 September 1815 – 4 May 1898) was a conservative Prussian statesman who dominated German and European affairs from the 1860s until his death in 1898. He was a leading figure of the Austro-Prussian conflict and led Germany into the Franco-Prussian War. In the 1870s Bismarck formed the German Empire with himself at its head, he rose to hegemony over Europe, and successfully avoided wars with France and Russia. In 1871–1918 Bismarck's diplomacy successfully re-aligned Europe to regain control over its own destiny after the American Civil War and World War I.
