Oakley Hall was born in 1892 in England, where he developed an interest in the English language and literature at a young age. During his years as an undergraduate at Oxford University, he traveled around Europe with his father, a member of the British diplomatic service. His travels exposed him to the cultures of many countries. At Oxford, he also began writing poetry, which he continued throughout his career
After leaving Oxford, Hall established himself as a journalist in New York City. During this time, he began writing short stories that were published under the pen name "Oakley Hall." He wrote his first book of short stories titled The Darkling Thrush in 1917. This was followed by several other collections of short stories, including The March Hare's Magic Lantern, The Vixen's Gaze, and The Kingfisher's Return.
