Gatambia joined the University staff as a teacher and instructor in agriculture. After teaching for five years at the University of Ibadan, Mr. Gatambia moved to the United States in 1954 to attend graduate school at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia where he earned his Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. After graduation, Mr.

Gatambia returned to Nigeria where he worked for UNICEF until 1965 when he moved to Canada where he began working for the United Nations Development Programme until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Gatambia also served on the advisory board of the School of Economics at Fisk University during this period. In 1987, Mr. Gatambia moved back to Nigeria where he became Director of Information & Communications Technology at the Federal Ministry of Information & Communication Technology.

He retired from that position in 1993 when he moved back to Canada with his wife, Helen Mba Obidike who is a nurse by profession, and their son Henry Newton Gatambia who is an agronomist. Mr. Gatambia spent some time working on his autobiography before passing away peacefully on 30 March 2013 after a brief illness due to diabetes mellitus at home surrounded by family members and friends on the 8th floor of Grace Hospital, Calgary, Alberta Canada. Newton was survived by his wife Helen who lives with their son Henry Newton Gatambia (an agronomist) and daughter Catherine Catherine Mba Obidike (a nurse) both live with them here in Edmonton Alberta Canada along with two grandchildren Henry and Clara Newton Gatambia and their dog named Diwali who has become part of our family too! The goal we set out to achieve also became a reality: we have donated over $1 million dollars to various charities and organizations around the world!
