Nelson Goodman is one of the outstanding philosophers of language. He was born in New York City on April 22, 1908. He graduated from Columbia University, where he received his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1934
A professor of philosophy at Columbia from 1954 to 1973, he was a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota from 1972 to 1974 and a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1974 to 1976. He died on January 8, 2001, in New York City.
