Nancy Scheper-Hughes is a social anthropologist, author and documentary film maker. In her work she has documented the social and cultural effects of illness in medical settings, especially in Guatemala. She is best known outside anthropology for her ethnographic films, especially Death Without Weeping (1993), an account of a mother's experience of a US hospital with a high mortality rate for childbirth, and Death Without Weeping 2: Women and Healthcare in Guatemala (1995), which focuses on healthcare provision for women in Guatemala.
