Nancy Scheper-Hughes is a social anthropologist, author and documentary film maker. In her work she has documented the social and cultural effects of illness in medical settings, especially in Guatemala. She is best known outside anthropology for her ethnographic films, especially Death Without Weeping (1993), an account of a mother's experience of a US hospital with a high mortality rate for childbirth, and Death Without Weeping 2: Women and Healthcare in Guatemala (1995), which focuses on healthcare provision for women in Guatemala. She has published over twenty books, including the bestselling Death Without Weeping: The Violence of Everyday Life in Guatemala (1992)
In 1996 she was awarded the PEN/Heimfeld First Amendment Award for "exposing the hidden violence of hospitals and clinics to their patients." Scheper-Hughes serves on the advisory board of Abating America's Epidemic: The Struggle to End Chronic Pain and Depression and the board of directors of Doctors Opposing Forced Treatment (DOF).
