Wright has taught at Cambridge University since 1994, where he was a Fellow of Trinity College from 1965 to 1970. He became a Fellow of Clare Hall in 1970 and King's College in 1977. He earned the Doctor of Letters degree from Oxford University in 1985.

He served as Dean of Clare Hall from 1981 to 1986 and as Master of Magdalene College from 1979 to 1986, during which time he founded the Albert C. Outler Chair in Christian Origins at Magdalene College. He also served as Principal of Gresham College, London, from 1999 to 2004, when he became Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
