Monica McCarty is the author of the award-winning novel, The Sweet Potato Queens of Antebellum North Carolina, which was named a "Notable Book" by both the Historical Novel Society and the Mississippi Author's Guild. She is also the author of The Sweet Potato Queens: A Novel of Love and Friendship in Antebellum North Carolina and the nonfiction article, "The Sweet Potato Queens: A Story in Black and White," which was published in 2001 in Tea & Roses: Women Writers on Friendship. Her short stories have been published in several anthologies, including Black Tales: A Journal of African American Creative Writing and Macaroni: A Journal of Food and Thoughts.
