He attended the University of Algiers for a year before being conscripted into the French army during World War II. As a young man, he worked with the National Liberation Front in the Algerian Revolution. In 1956, he was imprisoned by French authorities for his political activities when they were overthrown by an anti-colonialist military coup led by Colonel Houari Boumediene.

Upon release from prison, he moved to Paris where he continued to write and publish his literary works. In 1962, he returned to Morocco, where he serves as a member of the House of Writers and an adviser to the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
