Mira Sorvino is an Academy Award winning actress, writer, producer, and director. Born in the Bronx, New York, Sorvino grew up in a tight-knit Italian family in the South Bronx. She was raised in a Roman Catholic home where her mother was a teacher and her father was an elementary school principal. Mira graduated from the Professional Children's School, was accepted to both Sarah Lawrence College and New York University, but chose to attend NYU's Tisch School of the Arts to study acting
After graduating in 1983, she went on to appear in several short-lived television series.
