Arriving in Hollywood at age 18, he worked his way through the studio system, acting in over 100 television shows, including Bonanza (1959), The Big Valley (1965), Death Valley Days (1961), and The Loner (1961). He also directed two movies, including The Big Country (1958). He wrote three best-selling autobiographies, including Return to Lonesome Dove (1978).
