Michael Joseph Brown was born in London, England. His father was a member of the Royal Air Force and Brown himself was brought up in Australia where he worked as a photographer. He later became interested in photography and film making. He came to the US in 1964 and became known for directing documentaries for PBS's "American Playhouse" series
He is also famous for his autobiography, The Miracle of Life, which describes his own life-threatening battle with polio.
