He attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College before receiving his B.A. in Music from Queens College. He has been a professional musician for fifty years, playing saxophone and flute since 1963.
From 1966 to 1975 he was a member of the band the Emotions before forming his own band (The Michael J. Herbert Band) in 1975. He has played lead guitar for many famous bands including The Temptations (1970), The O'Jays (1969, 1970), The Stylistics (1975), Gloria Gaynor (1976), The Spinners (1976), Roberta Flack (1977), Patti LaBelle (1978), The Pointer Sisters (1979) and Gloria Gaynor (1980).
Mr. Herbert has also played with many notable artists including Roberta Flack, Darlene Love, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isaac Hayes, Miki Howard & The Soul Children, Patti LaBelle & Kenneth Gamble Jr., Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald, Gloria Gaynor & Peter Cetera, The Pointer Sisters & Freddie Jackson etc…
