Menzies McKillop, born in Perthshire, Scotland, was a mechanical engineer by profession. He started his career with the Shell Oil Company of India, Ltd., initially as a draftsman, but soon became an assistant engineer. After leaving Shell he moved to England where he worked for the Standard Steel Company of Sheffield, England. In 1945 he founded McKillop's Engineering and Plumbing Supplies and in 1951 he and six colleagues acquired the stock and business of the Australian plumbing and heating contractor Ransome and Marles in Melbourne
McKillop retired from active participation in McKillop's Group in 1978 and died in 1988.
