Maurice Druon was born in Paris on July 31, 1917. He is the author of numerous historical novels. He has received several awards—the Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honor, the Grand Prix National des Lettres, and the Grand Prix National des Arts et des Lettres. He is also a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
