Massimo Marino was born in 1968 and graduated from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia with a degree in physics, and then went on to receive a Ph.D. in the same subject from the University of Bologna. After teaching at the University of Bologna, he became a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Florence. In 1996 he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the U.S., where he studied for a number of years at Princeton University, Cornell University, and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

In 1998 he moved to the University of California at Santa Barbara's Institute for Theoretical Physics, where he is now an associate professor. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the "Premio Accademico del Lince" from Italy's Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, and a "Humboldt Fellowship" from Germany's Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
