Afterward, he attended Vanderbilt University, graduating with a degree in engineering. Following graduation, he began working as an engineer at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation where he worked on the development of aircraft engines for the P-38 Lightning aircraft. In 1959 Mr.
Ashton moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to continue working with the same company to develop engines for the F-104 Starfighter aircraft. Mr. Ashton retired from Lockheed following thirty years of employment in 1986.
