Marina Abramovic was born in 1946 in the Socialist Republic of Croatia, Yugoslavia. She has lived and worked since 1976 in the United States of America. Among her many achievements she is the founder of the Institute for the Study of the Visual Arts, an international organisation devoted to research and interpretation of applied visual arts. She has held exhibitions throughout the world and has published several books on art and performance including Rhythm 0, Nowhere (1985), The Other Side of Silence (1990), Walking on Water (1993) and Rhythm 0, New York (1998).
