Margaret Wolfe Hungerford was born in 1880 in New York City. She attended Barnard College, but her studies were interrupted by the death of her mother and illness which caused her to leave school for two years. She eventually returned to college, completing her degree at Columbia University in 1907. After graduation she took a position as an assistant teacher of English at the Walker School for Girls in New York City
She married Andrew W. Hungerford, who worked with her on several of her projects. Margaret Wolfe Hungerford published four books during her lifetime: The Book of Dreams (1910), A Book of Dreams (1911), The Book of Love (1912), and The Woman Who Dreamed (1914).
She also authored countless short stories and poems, many under the pen name Mrs. Henry C. Maxwell.
