Marcus Chown is a British-born journalist and science writer. He was educated at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and mathematics. After working as a newspaper reporter in Johannesburg, South Africa, he moved to Britain, where he worked as a science writer for the "Daily Telegraph" and then as a science editor for the "New Scientist". In 1984 he moved to New Zealand, where he has lived since
He has also worked as an editor for several scientific journals and as a freelance writer. He was awarded a PhD from Massey University in 1992, and his thesis is entitled "The Dark Side of the Universe: The Search for Dark Matter".
