Majora Carter is the founder of the internationally recognized organization, The Carter Center, and a human rights activist. Born in New York City in 1951, she moved to Atlanta at age 16 and attended Morehouse College. In 1975, with the help of the Reverend Joseph Lowery and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), she was involved in voter registration efforts in Lowndes County, Alabama. In January 1977, with Ms. Carter and Ms. Lowery, President Jimmy Carter nominated her to be the Special Assistant for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs for Peace, Human Rights and Refugees at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
