After two years working for one of his father's construction companies, Lyle's wife Lori suggested that he move to Austin so they could be closer to her family. He soon signed on with the band known as Lyle Lovett and thephiaxians. The group released two albums for RCA before breaking up in 1990.

Lyle went on to release his first solo album in 1992. It produced four hit songs, including "She Believes in Me." The album sold 1 million copies and earned him several Grammy nominations and an ASCAP award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. His second album also produced several hits including "Little Rock," "Turn Me Loose," and "I Want My Life Back." His third album titled Lyle Lovett was released in 1996 and proved to be another success for him; it sold over 1 million copies and earned him 3 Grammy nominations for Best Male Country Vocal Performance (for "The Road Not Taken") and Best Male Country Vocal Performance (for "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child").

He is currently touring with his band behind his latest album titled Lyle Lovett Live! which was released in 2006. The album features live performances recorded at various shows throughout 2006 and 2007.
