Ludwig Erhard (born October 9, 1886 in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany; died December 1, 1976 in Düsseldorf) was a German economist and politician who became the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany under West Germany's constitution. He was also the first Chancellor of the new "Länder" (states) of West Germany and was a member of the Weimar National Assembly and Reichstag. His term as chancellor lasted from 1949 to 1963. He served as Minister of Economics and Minister of Finance for West Germany from 1949 to 1953, and as Prime Minister from 1953 to 1963.
